Concerned by the reliance of open-source generative A.I. models on unlicensed image and text sources, I have been inspired to pursue more deliberate, collaborative methods of working with this controversial tool. Engaging with A.I. more as a creative partner than as a medium, my work explores its potential to augment the telling of stories and the creation of pictures. By submitting my own writing to ChatGPT and prompting the system to respond, new stories emerge, which I then illustrate using a GAN system (Generative Adversarial Network), a custom model trained using my own illustrations as data. This system reassembles my work, and I use the output as material for new illustrations, combining collage with hand drawn elements. The resulting series captured a willing exchange of human and robotic creativity, and point to the potentials and limitations of both.
